Clariden Takes 1st place at Odyssey of the Mind State Competition 2019 – Headed to World Finals
High School Team Awarded for Exceptional Talent in Coding and Engineering
Southlake, TX – April 16, 2019 – The Clariden School, a North Texas leader in accredited, private PreK – High School STEAM education, today announced that its high school team took 1st place at the Odyssey of the Mind 2019 State Tournament and will advance to the World Competition in May 2019. The State Tournament was held near Houston, Texas on April 6, 2019. This is Clariden’s 3rd consecutive year advancing to the World Competition. The Odyssey of the Mind Competition is reported to be “the largest international creative problem-solving competition.” (https://www.odysseyofthemind.com)
The high school team also won a prestigious Omer Award for “meeting and exceeding the goals of the Odyssey of the Mind creative problem-solving competition.” The judges commented that the Clariden team demonstrated “exceptional talent in coding and engineering when building their vehicle. They even developed their own app in order to control the vehicle with a phone. The program they wrote used Bluetooth to communicate with the motor to operate the vehicle.”
The Clariden high school team (Division III) consisted of Alyssa Bramble (G11), Ani Heng (G9), Damien Kazewych (G9), Danny Kazewych (G11), Sara Norton (G11), and Coby Warner (G11). Team coaches were Brady Warner and Rissa Westerfield. Odyssey of the Mind is a club activity for students at Clariden.
Teams select one of five problems published by Odyssey of the Mind organizers. Clariden chose Problem 1: “Omer to the Rescue Again.” They had to build a self-powered vehicle that could: Transport a student on multiple tasks, fit inside a suitcase, and be assembled, disassembled and reassembled – all in under 8 minutes. The actions all had to be delivered in a story format including costumes, acting, sets, and more. The Odyssey of the Mind World Finals Tournament will be held May 22-25, 2019 at Michigan State University. Clariden will compete against approximately 850 top teams from around the world.
